Lecture-performance This codex, owned by the Biblioteca de Palacio in Madrid, consists of nine volumes of watercolour paintings collected around 1780 by bishop Jaime Baltazár Martínez Compañón y Bujanda in his dioscese Trujillo. The paintings represent scenes from daily life, plant and animal life, portraits, maps, etc., made to inform king Carlos III of Spain about the region. Volume 2 includes 19 musical works performed during religious celebrations, or simply during Holidays held in local villages of the diocese. The scores are of immense value, first of all as they have been passed on in their original version and in writing instead of orally which was the tradition. Secondly they have enabled us to go to the origin of the traditional music of the region, and have also revealed links with the colonial musical heritage. Moreover the illustrations tell us something about musical instruments, dances, and clothing of those days. The CD of this program can be ordered here.
